Every pastor knows the feeling: it's Saturday night, and you're still scrambling to finish Sunday's sermon. A consistent weekly workflow can break that cycle. Here's how to build one that works for you.

Why a Workflow Matters

A repeatable process does three things:

  • Reduces cognitive load - You don't have to decide what to do next; the workflow tells you.
  • Improves sermon quality - Each step gets the attention it deserves, not whatever time is left.
  • Protects your margin - A good workflow finishes by Friday, giving you Saturday to rest.

The Five-Step Workflow

Step 1: Passage Research (Monday)

Start your week by immersing yourself in the text. Read the passage in multiple translations, consult commentaries, and note the historical context, key themes, and difficult questions.

Goal: Understand what the text meant to its original audience before you decide what it means today.

Time: 60–90 minutes

Step 2: Outline Development (Tuesday)

With your research done, shape the sermon's structure. Define the big idea, the movement of the message, and the application points. This is where you decide what to say and in what order.

Goal: A clear outline that a guest preacher could follow and preach.

Time: 45–60 minutes

Step 3: Manuscript Drafting (Wednesday)

Turn your outline into spoken language. Write the way you talk. Include transitions, illustrations, and application. Don't worry about perfection - just get the content down.

Goal: A full manuscript in your natural preaching voice.

Time: 90–120 minutes

Step 4: Review and Refinement (Thursday)

Read the manuscript aloud. Check for clarity, transitions, timing, and doctrinal accuracy. Cut anything that doesn't serve the big idea. Polish your opening and closing.

Goal: A sermon that's tighter and clearer than the first draft.

Time: 45–60 minutes

Step 5: Follow-Up Content (Friday)

Repurpose your manuscript into small group discussion questions, a devotional version, and social media posts. This extends the sermon's impact and serves your congregation throughout the week.

Goal: Content that keeps the sermon alive after Sunday.

Time: 30–45 minutes

Making It Stick

The best workflow is the one you'll actually follow. Start with these five steps, adjust the timing to fit your schedule, and use tools that reduce friction rather than adding complexity.
